The car rental company Turo is “actively partnering with law enforcement” as authorities investigate two deadly incidents involving vehicles rented through their app.
Early in the morning on New Year’s Day, a Texas man drove a rented Ford pickup truck into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing more than a dozen people and injuring 30 more. Later that same day, a man in Las Vegas detonated explosives that were placed inside a rented Tesla Cybertruck while parked outside the Trump International Hotel, killing the driver of the vehicle and injuring seven other people.
The Turo app operates similarly to Airbnb, allowing users to rent cars from private vehicle owners without ever meeting in person.
