California Democrats and advocate groups continue to mobilize against the impending crackdown on illegal immigration — including mass deportations — by the Trump administration, holding workshops, providing legal advice, and establishing a rapid response hotline, Newsweek reported Thursday.

President Donald Trump and new border czar Tom Homan began mass deportations on day one, starting with known violent offenders in the country illegally. But that dragnet will eventually widen to include all illegal immigrants.

“We are mobilizing to defend immigrant communities against Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda and are more prepared than we were for his first administration,” Gina Amato Lough, the directing attorney at Public Counsel’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, told Newsweek. “This time, there’s a strong and coordinated effort to protect immigrants from unjust policies on day one.”
