We have already reached the halfway point of the regular season. This week, the KMAJ sports team went to Hummer Sports Park to see the high powered Topeka High Trojans take on the Manhattan Indians in a battle of 6A foes.
Topeka High, a team averaging 55 points through the first three games, was halted in their tracks on Friday night against Manhattan. The Indians held Topeka High to a season-low 242 yards, including 100 yards rushing on 34 carries in a 21-14 win. The Indians improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Trojans suffer their first lost of the season and fall to 3-1.
Since their first loss of the season to Shawnee Heights, Manhattan has given up only seven points per game.
Through the first half, Topeka High struggled to get a of rhythm on offense. They only managed to get one first down in the half. Da’Vonshai Harden hit Larry White on a 66-yard touchdown pass on the second possession of the game, but punted six times in the first half, and fumbled once during the half.
Manhattan shut down Topeka High running back Ky Thomas, as the talented sophomore only had 47 yards on 20 carries. Harden finished with 142 yards passing and two touchdowns off 9 of 20 passing.
Junior running back Kevontae McDonald paced the Indians on offense, as he finished the game with 203 yards rushing on 27 carries and two touchdowns. Manhattan had 317 total rushing yards.
Manhattan will host Seaman (3-1) next Friday, while Topeka High will travel to Shawnee Heights to take on the undefeated T-Birds.
