Ukrainian Officer Arrested on Allegedly Spying for Russia

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) announced Friday it had arrested a lieutenant colonel accused of providing secret intelligence to Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU.

The SBU alleged the officer was recruited by Russian intelligence prior to the outbreak of the war and was “activated” in the spring of 2024, allegedly providing intelligence on Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance missions, particularly in the Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Crimean regions.

The officer, who has not been named, is held in custody and faces life imprisonment if convicted.
